Koma & Bones Take It to the Next Level...
Colin Allrich | Los Angeles, CA | 12/27/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The breakbeat duo of Koma and Bones step up to Distinctive's plate to deliver the next installment of the labels progressive breakbeat compilation Y4K. Trainspotters and break-heads are sure to be familiar with Koma and Bones these past couple of years. With their countless (and excellent) remixes & original tracks found on such labels as TCR and Forged, to their mixing of the 2nd installment of the streetbeat label's "Nu Horizons", its hard to miss them. Koma and Bones have a hard act to follow here, with Tayo doing a stellar job mixing the last episode, but they put together an awesome set and deliver the goods. The mix starts out with Terminalhead's dubby, funky mix of Sirene's "Love" and quickly moves through RYU, Drop Culture and into the killer sub bass and solid breaks of 2Sinners "Mr. Jingles". From there the boys lay down one of my favorite breakbeat records Circulation's "Turquoise" B.L.I.M's mix. B.L.I.M lays down a super dope resonating bass line that devastates over the cut-up rhythms. The set peaks off with the PMT remix of (Distinctive's own) Way Out West's "Intensify" that flows right into Koma and Bones own "High Rollin'" which alone is worth buying the CD.Any regrets when the journey is over? Well, I wish the mix had a little bit more intensity. There were some parts I just wish the beat would drop and rebuild back into some killer hard edged break with monster huge, hybrid styled bass. But left alone, its a great headphone/at home mix that meets the standards set by its predecessors."
Quality Nu Breaks Mix with Longevity
Jay Garcia | Central FL, United States | 08/31/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

".... I brought this CD almost a year ago and it still gets much rotation. It has all of the attributes of a quality breaks CD. Excellent mixing and deft, funky, quirky beats and basslines that don't stray too far to the darker side of breaks. The key here is selection. There's a generous smattering of deep, teeth-clenchingly satisfying bangers ("M.A.C.E.", "Mr. Jingles", "What Sounds Are"), punctuated by steady, bubbling burners ("Turquoise", "Q-Tohn", "High Rollin'"). The beginning three tracks start off the CD nicely with a nod to the funkier side of nu breaks. When I say that, it's not a reference to the "funky breaks" genre; just listen to "Come Alive" - it's infectious and has the unmistakeable rhythmic, deep, percussive dopeness that nu breaks is all about. Also, this CD far outshines most of the other breaks CDs out there. Tayo's 4YK contribution had potential (I mean, it's a good CD) but suffered from a lack of cohesion and application of some well-heard tunes (how many dang mixes is "Gyromancer" on??). And Bedrock Breaks was also hit and miss. But believe me, Koma and Bones' Y4K offering has got to be the sure shot."
