Synopsis

Time was that R&B had a host of girl/boy teams, but those days were a distant memory till the Jersey-based Koffee Brown got to brewing. Inspired by notables like Ashford & Simpson (though not as good), Koffee Brown inject their li'l slice of ghetto heaven love songs with enough product placement to keep things jiggy. Fortunately, the duo has enough vocal skills to satisfy the more sedate fan. The gimmick is that Vee (the girl) and Fonz (the guy) bring their respective gender bias to the songs, which means there's plenty of he-said-she-said to accompany producer Kay-Gee's undeniably hooky grooves and radio-ready beats. With its throw-your-hands-in-the-air appeal and Friday nite bounce, the first single, "After Party," is the epitome of good times. When Koffee Brown keep the mood up and lay off the melodrama they're fun, and good to the last drop. --Amy Linden

CD Reviews

Pretty good summer album
Jazysol79 | Germantown, MD USA | 06/19/2001
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Okay, so it has little substance, but "Mars/Venus" by Koffee Brown is a lot of fun to listen to, and definitely geared toward a summer car ride, or a party. Though the references to diamonds on the wrist, deep-dish rims, timbs, booties and the like get old, they embodie the spirit of today's pop and R&B music and all of its excess. Though they are just average as vocalists, the production is sharp enough to make the total package an engaging listen. Though "Afterparty" clearly is the standout, tracks such as "Weekend Thing" and "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" are well-performed. Though it's not quite a blockbuster, there is enough good feeling and vibrancy to make this a decent album."
Fun in a ghetto sort of way

"When i heard After Party on the radio, I knew that song was going to be big, and I had pretty high expectations for the album from Koffe Brown. I can say that I pretty much am satisfied with what I have heard. Having a male/female duo on every song is a unique twist to the ghetto love r&b genre, and most of the songs use that gimmick pretty effectively, such as Chick on da Side and Fingerpointing. Some of the lyrics to the songs made me think of a Jenny Jones or Ricki Lake episode, however. Be in the mood for "ghetto hymns" or you may be disappointed. If you are looking for a fun cd that you can jam to and laugh at simultaneously, this may be the one."

"When I first hear the song AFTER PARTY I liked it, but I didn't run out and by the Koffee Brown CD. Then I checked out the CD one day and really liked what I heard. Vee and Fonz sound great together although for the longest time I couldn't figure who the 2 voices on all the tracks were. It's great cruisin in the car music. Fun to try and sing the lyrics too---especially Weekend Thing."
