It's a beautiful picture of danger lurking, not shallow as the term 'pop' would betray, and heavier than metal could carry. By albums end you will feel like you're exiting a maze of otherworldly Texas characters & stories that may or may not exist. A subtle/slow ride between the narrow posts of beauty and danger." The irony here is that while the music underplays, the lyrics scream. Not in a cliche way, however.
The crucial point here one has to hear the words. And the vocalists deliver their twisted tales in a clear natural voice. So if you are expecting a histrionic voice (ala Butthole Surfers), you will not get it. Instead you get gorgeous voices delivering dark stories over a sound that delivers what if Velvet Underground (circa third album)was from Austin. Admittedly this album takes a few listens to get but it is worth it. As they say, this one has legs. The care and deliberation in this minimalistic noir country gives it life beyond the short attention span theatre that is modern indie music. A classic for the detail oriented. Happy thrillseekers not need apply. This is about delving into the Southern 90s Darkness. I can't say it lifts you up but it gets you through. Brilliant." |
