CD Reviews

Welcome back!

"Anyone who's spent time with Katrina and the Waves' great albums (the two Attic LPs, "Shock Horror," or their self-titled major label debut) knows that Rew is the king of succinct, rocking anglo-pop. "Tunnel. . ." is an amazing return: great melodies, clever lyrics, and typically superb guitar work. He's not a power-belter vocally, but his cockney-coated voice has great charisma and charm. I don't know where he's been, but it's great to have him back."
Great songs and arrangements on classic 2nd solo album

"Rew is probably best known as the main songwriter (and one of the founders) of Katrina & The Waves. His pedigree is impressive and experience goes beyond that. Rew was also a member of the seminal Robyn Hitchcock band The Soft Boys. His guitar playing on Underwater Moonlight and other Soft Boys albums is quite impressive and he makes a fine foil to Robyn. So what does this album sound like? Imagine power pop similar to Badfinger with a bit of Byrds jangle thrown in for good measure.Tunnel Into Summer has 12 rock solid songs full of strong hooks, terrific guitar solos and very good lyrics. Although Rew found greater success with Walking On Sunshine (and The Bangles cover version of Walking Down To Liverpool), TIS is a stronger album than any he recorded with The Waves (and the early albums are very strong indeed). Rew's third solo album Grand Central Revisited is just a notch below this terrific sophomore effort in quality. Rew started performing again with The Soft Boys and their new album Nextdoorland is terrific as well. Now if someone would only reissue the classic first Rew album (recorded with members of The Soft Boys and The Waves)The Bible of Bop, I'd be a happy, contented KR fan."
Guitar-Brit-Pop reduced to the max

"My favorite album of 2000, that's sure right now. Great songs in small arrangements - I'm really impressed by the terrific guitars and the smart voice. As said in the review before: great melodies and clever lyrics, some funny (Little Ray of Sunshine) and some sentimental (Honey is that Love). Even more likable that Kimberley doesn't seem to take it all too serious. To quote "If there's an Answer tell me now": If there's something better than this... stop wasting my time, and show me where to sign. I'd sign too, Mr Rew !"
