Synopsis

Album Description
Kim and Reggie Harris return with the anticipated follow-up to 1999's critically acclaimed "Guide My Feet." The folk duo has worked to create a stunning album of depth, social vision and joyous celebration of the human spirit. "Rock of Ages" has a more contemporary feel than previous Harris CDs, with seven of the songs on the CD written by Reggie. Standout tracks include "Crack in the Wall," about the rise of violence in America, "The Stars that Didn't Shine," about baseball's "Negro Leagues," and the humorous but useful "Passive Restraint," an ode to car seatbelts that was aired on National Public Radio's "Car Talk" program. The Harrises have always featured African-American gospel influences in their music (their best-known CD, "Steal Away: Songs of the Underground Railroad," contained many black spirituals), and "Run Mary Run," "Eyes on the Prize" and "Get On Board" fill this CD's quota. Longtime interpreters of songs of the late Phil Ochs, the Harrises include "Too Many Martyrs," written by Ochs and the late Bob Gibson, about the murder of Medgar Evans, a pivotal event in the civil rights movement. Kim and Reggie have been performing together for over 25 years. They bring their astounding vocal talents, both solo and in harmony, to a wide variety of traditional, contemporary and original material. Deeply committed to social activism, the Harrises have been featured in performances at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Smithsonian Institute, Philadelphia Folk Festival and concert stages around the world. They have also been featured on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition and the CBS television program , "An American Christmas." Appleseed is proud to present this recording by Kim and Reggie Harris --wonderful musicians, friends, and steadfast proponents of social change through music.
