CD ReviewsNot just another Hollywood Hair Band Justin Gaines | Northern Virginia | 04/08/2005 (4 out of 5 stars) "Before joining Guns n' Roses, guitarist Gilby Clarke was a member of Kill for Thrills, who released a single album - Dynamite from Nightmareland - in 1989. I have to say, Dynamite from Nightmareland really surprised me. I picked it up expecting an L.A. Guns style sleaze rock album, and it does have elements of that sound, but the album has more of a creative and unique vibe.
Dynamite from Nightmareland is still definitely in the hair metal style, but it reminds me a lot of Saigon Kick and Enuff Z'nuff, only without the full-on Beatles obsession. Intelligent and emotional lyrics combined with a willingness to break free of the hair metal clichés make this album stand out from the rest of the pack. It's melodic, has plenty of rock punch, but there's a real heart and soul here that the average Hollywood hair band lacked. I'd definitely recommend Dynamite from Nightmareland to anyone who enjoys the whole 80's Hollywood hair metal scene, as well as fans of the more creative bands like Saigon Kick and Extreme. It's one of the better, and more overlooked, `80s rock albums out there." |
