Synopsis

Product Description
Rankin's second release follows in the same musical direction as his debut. Again, there are fine covers of singer/songwriters of the late '60s, including reworkings of music from Gordon Lightfoot, Steve Stills, and Donovan. While My Guitar Gently Weeps, one of two Beatles covers, gives birth to Rankin's ability to make Beatles songs all his own, and Goffin & King's Up on the Roof illustrates Rankin's 1950s Brill Building, pop sensibility.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Rankin's second Mercury release follows in the same musical direction as his debut. Again, there are fine covers of singer/songwriters of the late '60s, including reworkings of music from Gordon Lightfoot, Steve Stills, and Donovan. An ambitious cover of the Bert Jansch classic "Needle of Death" shows off Rankin's guitar skillfulness. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," one of two Beatles covers, gives birth to Rankin's ability to make Beatles songs all his own, and Goffin & King's "Up on the Roof" illustrates Rankin's 1950s Brill Building pop sensibility. This wonderful, long-out-of-print recording will hopefully find its way back in print someday.
