Synopsis

Product Description
Live & Mo' is a custom blend of songs hand picked by multiple Grammy winning artist Keb' Mo' for the premier release on his own label Yolabelle International. Comprised of six live performances harvested from pinnacle moments on the road and four new studio recordings, including the aspirational anthem A Brand New America and the wry funky groove of Government Cheese.Live and Mo' represents another musical experience to be savored from Keb' Mo'. Mo's music is a purely post-modern expression of the artistic and cultural journey that has transformed the Blues, and his own point of view, over time. His distinctive sound embraces multiple eras and genres, including pop, rock, folk, jazz and the singer songwriter movement. For Keb' Mo' the common bond between these influences is the underlying storytelling ethic, the power of song to convey human experience and emotional weight.Keb' Mo' is a multiple Grammy award winner for Best Contemporary Blues album in 1997,1999 and 2005. He was nominated four other times. He has also won 10 WC Handy Blues awards. His self-titled first album from 1994, Keb' Mo', has been certified Gold for sales in excess of 500,000.Keb' Mo' portrayed Robert Johnson in the documentary film Can't You Hear the Wind Howl? and portrays Jimmy Rogers in the forthcoming Who Do You Love, the biopic of Leonard Chess and Chess Records. He also composed music for 18 episodes of television's Freddie series (Freddie Prinze jr.), was a guest actor on five episodes of Touched By An Angel and more...

CD Reviews

A good introduction for people new to Keb' Mo'
G. E. Harrison | Cheltenham | 12/09/2009
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This is the first release on Kevin's own label Yolabelle and comprises six live tracks and four new studio recordings - 'Victims of comfort', 'One friend', 'A Brand New America' (a slightly sickly but sincere response to Obama's election) and 'Government Cheese'. The first three of these tracks are nice laid-back ballads featuring Keb's wonderful voice but 'Government Cheese' a 12-bar rap on the welfare diet is more funky (albeit also laid-back). On the live tracks both Keb and the band sound really good (sometimes you forget which are the live tracks), with 'Perpetual Blues Machine' being the most bluesy. My favourites are probably 'Shave yo' legs' with its great loping bass and 'Hole in the bucket' with its nice harmonica.

Keb' Mo' always reminds me of Eric Bibb, both have wonderful voices and both produce very commercial modern songs rooted in a blues/folk sensibility. This is a very well-played record that sounds great but I find it hard to see why it isn't just a live record and why the live and studio tracks are mixed up. The live tracks are very similar to album versions so fans who already have his previous CDs are unlikely to want these new versions as well. However, this career-spanning selection of songs would make a good introduction for people new to Keb' Mo'.

A beautiful compilation of live and studio recordings

"Wow! Keb' Mo' continues to produce amazing music. Whether he's re-recording one of his own songs (Victims of Comfort) or playing a song in a totally different way (Perpetual Blues Machine), he never ceases to amaze with his endless talent. Mr. Mo' clearly spent a lot of time picking which songs to include and which to omit as the album flows organically from song to song. Every song is a gem, from the touching A Brand New America to the warmth of the live version of "The Action", Live & Mo' is an experience not to be missed!"
Style & Charm

""Live & Mo'" is Keb's first new album since 2006's "Suitcase." This release mixes six live performances with four studio cuts. He goes back to his gold first self-titled CD to open with "Victims of Comfort." His second album Just Like You is represented by three tracks in these new versions: "More Than One Way Home" & "The Action." My favorite track on "Live & Mo'" also comes from that second effort where Mo's version of "Perpetual Blues Machine" smokes with stinging electric lead and an addictive pulsing beat, "You had style; you had class; you had everything to make a love last; You had grace; you had charm, you had me hanging on your arm." Two tracks are from Keep It Simple, the charming "Shave Yo' Legs" & "One Friend." "Change" from "The Door" plays as well as the original. "Hole in the Bucket" has Keb's great toe-tapping rhythm that puts a smile on your face, "Martha, Martha, don't you cry." "Government Cheese" pits a biting ironic lyric next to a catchy melody, "It's late in the evening & I'm on my knees cause I'm oh so grateful for my government cheese." The set ends with "A Brand New America," one of Keb's earnest slow songs, "I am filled with emotion as the flag is unfurled." "Live & Mo'" is a bit of a review, but a sweet one. It's great to have Keb' back! Enjoy!"
