CD ReviewsA NEW OLD SOUND ROBERT BLANKEN | PEMBROKE PINES, FLORIDA United States | 02/07/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "AS WE KAYAK FANS HAVE LEARNED OVER THE MANY YEARS, ANYTHING BY THIS BAND WILL BE WELL RECEIVED BY TRUE FANS; BEING SO HARD TO GET FOR SO LONG. THE WHINERS OUT THERE WILL CARP ABOUT KAYAK NO LONGER HAVING MAX WERNER'S HEAVENLY VOCALS THAT SO MUCH DEFINED THE "KAYAK SOUND", BUT MUSIC IS ABOUT DYNAMICS: CONSTANT CHANGE. THE NEWEST RELEASE, "NIGHT VISION", IS TERRIFIC! SO THE NEW SINGER SOUNDS SOMETIMES LIKE A VERY YOUNG PETER HAMMILL. THE BRILLIANT COMPOSITIONS ARE STILL THERE, AND KAYAK IS AT THE TOP OF THEIR FORM. AND "CLOSE TO THE FIRE" IS AN INSTANT CLASSIC TO BE RATED WITH "ROYAL BED BOUNCER". NOW THE NEXT EVENT WILL BE THE LONG-AWAITED RE-RELEASE OF "THE LAST ENCORE", THEIR 1976 RECORD THAT SOMEHOW BECAME LOST TO US YANKS. TON, PIM, AND ALL THE OTHERS, THANK-YOU FOR KEEPING SO CLOSE TO THE FIRE." A Pleasant Surprise! Russ Bellinger | Bradenton, Florida USA | 08/05/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "Having been a Kayak fan since Royal Red Bouncer, I was happy to hear that they had reformed as a band again a few years back. I purchased Close to the Fire and really enjoyed it. It was great to hear Max Werner's voice again after so many years. The songs were equally as good as on previous albums. When I purchased Night Vision I was a little shocked to see that they already had replaced Max (once again). The first listen I didn't really care for the new singer, so I put it aside for a month or so. Then I picked it up and played it again and it struck me! I love this CD! This is one of the very best Kayak CDs recorded so far. Simply great songwriting, great musicianship, great vocals! At first I thought it sounded a little too pop, but after giving it another listen I found it is much, much more. If you like Kayak's music, you will love this CD." Glorious ScorpionSting | 12/26/2003 (4 out of 5 stars) "For us long-starved progressive rock fans in the U.S., this is like throwing meat to a starving man. This CD is worth its price for one song alone: "Miracle Man," an ungodly powerful, mega-testosterone, glorious epic that I've blasted until my ears blew out. In my mind, it is perhaps the greatest prog-rock song of all time. Though the rest of the CD includes some ho-hum work, two other songs leave me in awe of Ton Scherpenzeel's composing brilliance: "Hold Me Forever," an achingly beautiful song of lost love that almost brings tears to my eyes, and "Rings of Saturn" a melodic mid-tempo song with a touch of sadness that beautifully ends the CD. If you're at all a progressive-rock fan, you will love this album. Now if only once I could see Kayak in concert here in California, this twenty-year Kayak fan would die happy..."
