Synopsis

Amazon.com
An album of memories as much as music, Jacobs's third release for Bar/None places her in the indie-rock company of Dave Schramm (Yo La Tengo), Peter Holsapple (the dBs), Susan Cowsill and Vicki Peterson (Continental Drifters, the Bangles) and, sonically, everything falls into place. "Never Be Afraid" is a driving, beautifully harmonized anthem; "A Good Night for Sleeping" is sly power pop with hit potential; and "Stole the Madonna" is simply one of the more lovely, evocative folk ballads of the year. Jacobs's voice can be a bit precious and coy in its childlike soprano, but it's suited to her subjects. And to her credit she makes these songs of family history intriguing to the listener, investing far more in her stories than most pop-influenced songwriters. --Roy Kasten

Why Have I Never Heard Of This Wonderful Artist Before?
Leslie Hiller | New York, NY USA | 06/10/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A close friend of mine, a brilliant writer and essayist, received a fan letter and a copy of HYDRANGEA from Kate Jacobs, and was enormously taken with her music. She lent me the CD and, after ordering it, I promptly ran to a record store to buy whatever else I could find that bore her name. Kate Jacobs has immediately become one of my favorite musicians and songwriters. Her lyrics are beguiling and full of pockets of naked truth, her melodies lyrical and irresistable, her harmonies gorgeous. Never depressing thanks to the bouncing melodies, though serious emotional issues are fully addressed in the songs, is a big plus for the depression-prone introspective listener. Tinged with a streak of country-music, Kate Jacobs is a gem of a song-writer and performer, and it is a sad statement about the music industry in this country that I only came to hear of her in such a round-about and unlikely way."
Poetry. Pure and simple. A joy to listen to.

"My husband heard one song from this album on NPR and knew I had to have it. Since then, I've bought every other Kate Jacobs album I could get my hands on. I have never been dissapointed. The songs tell the most wonderful stories, and the melodies stay in your head for days. I find Kate Jacobs to have not only an incredible voice, but an amazing writing talent. All of her albums weave you through tales with striking imagery. I highly recommend investing in the entire collection!"
Kate has made popular music safe for smart people again

"Kate's music is lyrical, surprising, and has the best, most interesting lyrics in popular music. Even her band is amazing. Where did these people come from?"
