"Herbert von Karajan was one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, but -- great though he was -- I often preferred other conductors in much of his repertoire. But where music of the Strauss family was concerned Karajan was without peer. Willi Boskovsky was very good in this repertoire, but Karajan was the greatest. And on this CD Karajan conducts the greatest Strauss orchestra of all: the Vienna Philharmonic -- an orchestra which seemingly has the Strauss idiom in its blood. This CD contains several of Johann Strauss II's greatest works, including The Fledermauss and Gypsy Baron overtures and Blue Danube, Emperor, and Tales from the Vienna Woods waltzes plus other works. As a bonus treat it includes Music of the Spheres, the greatest waltz composed by Josef Strauss, the very talented younger brother of Johann II, and a genuine masterpiece. This CD is outstanding."
