CD Reviews

In the Court of Kamelot

"I'm new to Kamelot so my review will probably be brief and an over view. But from what I've listened to so far from this group is killer. I would rate them right up there with Dream Theater. Khan, for me, is somewhere between James LaBrie and Geoff Tate with his voice and delivery. I can't really say that there is anything negative here. The lead off track, 'Rule the World' after the opening 'Solitaire' as a segway is just fantastic. If you love progressive rock or power metal or power prog as I call it, then pick up this cd to start and then work your way to their previous release, 'The Black Halo'. Outstanding."
A delayed response to creativity

"I heard of this album last year and I saw the video for Ghost Opera on demand. I have to admit when I first saw the video I thought to myself what in the world is this drek. Obviously I didn't really pay attention. Fast forward a year later and I decided to give them another chance because everyone compares them to one of the greats in prog-metal. OMG this album is amazing. Have I heard this before (YES) but this band brings something a little different in the way of Khan's voice. His vocal control is incredible and he is a creative writer along with vocal arrangements. Also the keyboardist is flawless. This guy makes every song sound fuller and weirder. He plays throughout the whole album. Not in certain parts of songs. He is EVERYWHERE. Pay attention and you will hear him. I feel the vocalist and the keyboardist drive this band into another level. Youngblood also creates some really odd riffs. Put it all together and it's a masterpiece. I checked out their catalog and this band turned from your average run of the mill prog-metal band into a creative, stand alone prog-metal band. Pay attention to the vocals and the keyboardist to see what I'm talking about. Most of the songs are structured the same so be aware. I love creative bands. I'm with them all the way. And YES call me an Idiot for ignoring this before. I deserve it....LOL.

Also if you can check out the videos. They make this band look and feel larger than life. The Human Stain is a brilliantly constructed song."
Not up to Kamelot's high standard

"I'm a big Kamelot fan and have every album. To provide context for my opinion, my top favorite albums in order are Karma, Black Halo, 4th Legacy, Epica... Over the years they have shown themselves to be amazing song writers, not just the typical "cut and paste" riffs together sort of compositions you normally hear. On this album, it seems that they really rushed the song writing process and didn't put as much thought and creativity behind the arrangements. The songs mainly seem either very formulaic or the opposite... songs that leave the listener feeling that something was missing, a chorus change, a bridge here, an extra verse or solo there... Many of the songs just sound amateurish for a band that has reached their status. Don't misunderstand me though... Kamelot is a wonderful band and I love them still. However, if you're new to Kamelot, I highly suggest picking up one of the aforementioned albums rather than start with this shallow and weak effort. I sincerely hope their next album is given the full Kamelot treatment like I know they are capable of."
