A "Nice to Have"

"The best performances of this music are definitely found in the numerous New Year's concerts of the Vienna Philharmonic, and for me, the very often enthusiastic applause after every piece is performed in this events adds something to the experience of listening to the Strauss Family music. Karajan's own approach to this music for the 1987 New Year's concert is in fact more appealing than this recording. Never the less, Karajan's digital studio recordings of this very familiar and accessible music always has something to satisfy your ear. Most people say that Karajan's earlier recordings are better, and in some ways it might be true, but the sound here is far superior than the analog versions and the performances are in many aspects equally good. You won't waste your money and from time to time is nice to listen to studio recordings of this repertoire."
