"You never have time to be bored with Lukas Foss' The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County (NPD 85609). For starters, it runs only 40 minutes or so and it is truly funny. Richard Auldon Clark conducts the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra with a lively cast that includes Julianne Baird, Frederick Urrey, Kevin Deas, Peter Castaldi, Geoffrey Friedley, Christopher Arneson, and Mark Moliterno. Librettist Jean Karsavina was wise enough to give rhymed passages to be set to music as well as the delightful addition of "Sweet Betsy from Pike" and "Lulu's Song" which was written after the premiere to give the soprano more to do. Just about everything here works! The short running time of the CD is expanded by putting an eleven minutes narration on Track 1 drawn from the Twain story; but you will probably start on Track 2 for future hearings. On the other hand, I want all teachers to take note as to how valuable this could be to get children to want to (dare I say it?) READ the orginal. This is indeed the best of the Newport offerings in this current batch of CDs I have audited recently for my reviews. (Herberts "Elaine" and "Straus' "Chocoate Soldier" come in close seconds.)"
