Synopsis

Product Description
Julie Hardy, a recent winner of the ASCAP Young Composer award, presents a diverse program on The Wish, demonstrating her formidable talent as a composer with six original compositions. On the Verge, Patience and Soaring form a suite depicting the artist s personal journey as a musician in New York City, and showcase her gift for creating stunning melodies set over modern harmonies and grooves. Hardy feels that she can tell a story with or without lyrics, and her compositions prove to be just as evocative as the great standards found on this recording. For the recording of The Wish Hardy brought together an amazing lineup of musicians who are causing a major creative impact on today's jazz scene, including Ben Monder (guitar), Jaleel Shaw (alto saxophone), Sam Sadigursky (saxophones, clarinet), Randy Ingram (piano), Matt Clohesy (bass), and Kendrick Scott (drums). These artists have collectively performed with jazz luminaries such as Roy Haynes, Terrance Blanchard, John Scofield, Paul Motion, Maria Schneider, Dianne Reeves and many others. With the release of The Wish, Julie Hardy joins a roster of some of the world s premier talents.

CD Reviews

Awful
A Jazz Fan | New York, NY | 03/14/2008
(1 out of 5 stars)

"I purchased this CD for a little over $2 and I was totally underwhelmed. Her tone is bland, her singing is lifeless and her musical approach is "by-the-numbers" jazz. Julie Hardy does not swing and her improvisations are dull. On CD she is less than mediocre, and on stage, she is markedly worse."
Julie Should Wish Harder

"I am baffled by the reviews that refer to Miss Hardy as a "real jazz vocalist." Her voice at it's best is

somewhat reminiscent of early Judy Collins, but without the warmth. The sound of Hardy's

voice is really more suited to present day Broadway, than to jazz. She does not swing,

and has no feeling for the blues, which is an essential quality and an easily identifiable element

in any true jazz singer. The singer gets low marks from me on all counts, as an improviser,

and in terms of lyric interpretation. To do justice to a great standard, the singer needs to communicate

the lyric to the listener. The 2 classic ballads, I Wish I Knew and I Fall In Love Too Easily are absolutely

destroyed here, with all of the beauty just sucked out. The arrangement of All Or Nothing At All is

dreadful, as is the treatment of Paul McCartney's I'm Looking Through You. These are hardly innovative arrangements, really quite pretentious, student level work. I gave this album one star, but honestly, it doesn't even deserve that.

"Finally, I got to listen to this album that I bought along with the first album of this same singer. I based my purchase of this CD on the positive reviews I read here about her debut recording. Because I heard her first recording, I was prepared for this second one. I would say that she is OK. Not great, but all right. I see how she may be influenced by Dominique Eade and other singers along that genre, but it is a pale comparison really. I do not expect to play this CD again."
