CD ReviewsAvoid this album. He is much better than this Paul Watson | Ireland | 03/08/2008 (2 out of 5 stars) "Light in the Dark is a Julian Sas Compilation. That would sound appealing to a new convert who would like to know more about this Rory Gallagher influenced Boogie merchant from the Netherlands. Not so I'm afraid. If this was your first Julian Sas CD purchase, you more than likely would not be searching the web for more of his CDs in a hurry. The reason is because the Blues music he has chosen for this CD is all one paced (i.e. Slow Blues) and boring. I am surprised he did'nt include a song played on his National Steel guitar. That would have at least given it a bit of variety. Julian's previous albums have usually included some classic out n out Boogie Rockers in a Rory and Hendrix type groove and the use of his great Slide guitar will have you hooked. We all know Walter Trout is an awesome guitarist and really rocks out but mixes it with Slow Blues and ballads. It is like Walter releasing a whole album of slow songs like Reason I'm gone, Finally gotten over you, The Mountain song, If you just try etc etc, or even a Rory compilation full of songs in the mood of Calling Card, I wonder who, What in the world etc. Nothing wrong with the songs, but these guys are not totally in the B.B. King stable. If they were, I would not be so critical. Julian's voice is also his problem. It is a very deep strong voice, but after a few songs, it feels as though he need not sing at all, just talk, as there is not a lot of difference. But when Julian boogies, its a different story altogether. There are a lot better Julian Sas CDs out there. I recommend his For the Lost and Found CD which will give you a good insight of the sublime skills of the man. His Live album is also a good place to start, but for the real deal, check out one of his DVDs." I am a "Blues Man" and this is the first time I've heard of or listed to Julian Sas and love his music. It reminds me a lot of Roy Buchanan (one of the best blues guitarists ever in my opinion and his album "Your Not Alone" is in my all-time top 25 studio produced albums) & Rory Ghallagher. If you like this music and have not listened yet to Joe Bonamassa (another great blues artist I recently discovered) you should check his music out." |
