CD ReviewsAn inspired debut. Jay Freeman | New York City | 08/27/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "I had seen Josh Weinstein doing his funny and harrowing songs as a solo act in New York, and was knocked out by how they sound on disc. Josh never sang better and the band that backs him is perfect -- the playing is intense and intuitive, whether the songs are rockers or 4 a.m. closing-time blues.
But the songs themselves are the star. Check out the exuberant "Make This Boy Your Man," the scarifying "Nothing Sadder Than a Saturday Night," the brilliantly rueful "Fight We Didn't Have" -- they're packed with memorable lyrics, with melodies that have an instant-standard quality. He's got a lot of influences, obviously, but this collection of original tunes is truly original." |
