At the very end of his composing career, Haydn's lifelong employers requested that he compose a yearly Mass for the name day of Princess Marie Hermenegild Esterházy. Haydn had another royal admirer (indeed he had many) in the person of the Empress Marie Theresa whose library boasted a copy of this Mass, from which source sprang the rumor that Haydn had composed it for the Empress herself (that honor actually belongs to his Te Deum). The Mass is vintage Haydn: great tunes, a couple of terrific choral fugues, and orchestral writing of great charm, and where required, power. The so-called "Little Organ" Mass is a Missa Brevis (Short Mass) that as the name implies, features a prominent solo organ part. These performances are as fine as the others in Chandos's excellent series of Haydn Masses. --David Hurwitz

"This is the first in the series of recordings of Haydn masses directed by Richard Hickox whose love and understanding of Haydn make him uniquely suited to this task. As far as I know, Haydn wrote six major masses which Hickox set out to record; as of today we have four volumes, so I suppose we should expect two more. All of these volumes constitute a major musical event (they are, in addition to this one: Creation Mass; Harmonienmesse; and Paukenmesse). Hickox directs a period orchestra whose sensitive and responsive playing is well matched by the singing of the well-balanced chorus joined by some of the best soloists on the English baroque scene. The musical vision is remarkably consistent from volume to volume enahnced by the repeated appearance of some of the soloists throughout the series. The result is some of the best Haydn music on disc!"
Simply delightful

"After years of listening to masses from Gregorian Chants to Stravinsky, I'm finally catching up with Hayden's masses, which fit very nicely between the mountainous heights of the works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart. I especially prefer this recording to a similar one with the Nelson mass paired with a Vivaldi Gloria mass. This recording is just a bit short as modern CDs go, but if you can get it at a nice discount, this one is a winner if you like masses or baroque / Classical music."
