CD Reviews

Interesting music in fine performances
G.D. | Norway | 02/09/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The Ripening is one of those works that really seems to divide opinions. Some people appear to view it as one of the hidden true masterpieces of the repertoire, though personally I have to side with Lebrecht on this one; while there are some very fine parts and some glorious orchestral touches, it is all a little overblown and hollow (but I am certainly willing to stand corrected on that issue). It is intended as a formally fairly complex description of the life-cycle of man, divided up into parts on Youth, Love, Fate, Resolve and Self-Moderation all held together under a structural arch culminating in a serenely beautiful coda. Along the way we get some interesting harmonic touches and wonderful orchestral effects (including a wordless women's choir). The performances here under Pesek are very fine, indeed, although the Supraphon version might in the end be slightly preferable. The coupling, Praga, depicts the city in light of its partly tragic, partly optimistic history, a quietly nocturnal piece that eventually gathers momentum to end in an impressive, fanfare theme based conclusion. It is also given an impressive performance, and overall the sound quality is very good. Confidently recommended."
