UN MUSICO LATINOAMERICANO IMPERDIBLE
pablo rossi | BUENOS AIRES, BUENOS AIRES Argentina | 04/19/2002

This is Drexler's masterpiece

"This is one of Drexler's earlier works, his third to be exact. And it is a very important one for him, since he went to Spain to record this CD invited by Joaquin Sabina, and then decided to stay there to live. The year is 1996, almost a decade before jumping into the international spotlight by winning an Oscar with his song "Al Otro Lado del Rio".

This Uruguayan composer and singer has always been known in his home country for his excellent skill for creating beautiful lyrics. There are others that have a better voice, but not many come close with their compositions. And please, don't get me wrong, Drexler has a very good voice, and certainly has the technique needed for good singing. There are other Uruguayans though, that have a voice that is almost incomparable, like Ruben Rada and Jorge Schellemberg.

I have listened many many times to all of Drexler's works, and so far this is my favorite. It has songs that talk, among other topics, about the loved one that left, the beauty of living by the sea, the wooing game, a peeping tom, and changes of heart between lovers. There are several great songs in this CD, such as "Luna Negra", "Cerca del Mar", "Ganas de Ti", "Un Lugar en Tu Almohada", "La Luna de Espejos" and "Vaiven". But there is a song in this CD that is my favorite song by Drexler. "Dos Colores: Blanco y Negro" is a song that faithfully shows what happens many times in Uruguay and other Latin American countries. The song talks about a project (the song hints at a love story, but the metaphor is clear) that starts with great intentions and has the opportunity of becoming something great, but along the way things become complicated and instead of getting a result in color, ends up being in black and white.

Throughout the CD, the music is smooth and pleasant. But as I mentioned before, the most beautiful thing about this work is the lyrics. Therefore, knowing Spanish, or at least understanding enough to follow the message, will provide much more pleasure than the alternative. For those that are looking for a good example of Uruguayan music or for more from Drexler beyond the song that gave him the Oscar, this is as good a place to start as any."
