Evolution of a performer

"I was introduced to the Pousette-Dart band by the (out of print) Amnesia album. That album was a real treat, but with recorded Pousette-Dart material hard to find, it was hard to be a "devoted fan" and follow what Jon's been doing more recently. With that in mind, Sample This is an interesting experience in two ways. First, the songwriting remains good and the musicianship has improved. Second, Jon has done some very interesting revisions or self-covers of his older material. (Not to worry, this is an originals album, not a rehash or "greatest hits" compilation.) Just compare the styles of the original Amnesia with Amnesia Revisited. And if the chord changes on another selection don't have you going "wait a minute, that's ..., no wait, no it's not," well, I suppose you have to be familiar with the older tune to do that. The overall style and tone of this album is grittier, maybe harsher, that the older country-rock I recall. Not bad at all, but distinctly different. The lyrics of the title track make me wonder if Jon's been ripped off by loopers. Fortunately, JP-D is generally too upbeat a performer to come across as bitter. :-)"

"This guy just sounds amazing. The slide playing is up there with some of the best I've ever heard and the writing and vocals are stellar. Why isn't this guy all over the place. Do yourself a favor and check this out if you like music that makes a lasting impression."
