"Oklahoman Johnny Bond moved to California in the 1930s where he became a bit player in B-grade Westerns. He established himself as a first rank western and honky tonk songwriter at the same time, penning hits for Tex Ritter, Gene Autry and others. This nice collection brings together some of his own singing from the 1930s and '40s. "I'll Step Aside" is one of the truly beautiful pieces from the era and proves that a songwriter known for novelties could produce deeply emotional poetry. There's a lot more to Bond than this CD, but it is a good start. Imagine a Bear Family set!"
