All Music Guide
A saxophone-led instrumental group from Toledo, OH, Johnny & the Hurricanes had their first hit with "Cross Fire" in 1959. The classic Hurricanes' template was to mix R&B with traditional melodies, which culminated in their biggest hit, "Red River Rock," a cranked-up version of the campfire tune "Red River Valley." "Beatnik Fly" repeated the trick with a melody drawn from "Blue Tail Fly," the old minstrel show chestnut that goes "jimmy crack corn and I don't care/my master's gone away." Although not a surf band, that craze in the early '60s helped the Hurricanes touring schedule, and when surf died in 1964, so did Johnny & the Hurricanes and they disbanded in 1965.
