"Sorry for the emphasis, but as with everything in this world, people tend not to bother reading the information provided to them, as a former bad review showed. This is the musical score for the movie, not the soundtrack. You can also purchase the soundtrack. They will both be wonderful additions to your musical library. This was a wonderful, sweet movie. I can't think of a better child actor than Dakota Fanning."
"Powell's score is provocative as a musical statement"

"Let me start this review by stating ~ director Jessie Nelson chose a great cast for this challenging screenplay. The cast of Sean Penn (Sam Dawson), Michelle Pfeiffer (Rita Harrison), Dakota Fanning (Lucy-is outstanding wide eye little girl who steals your heart), Dianne Wiest (Annie), Richard Schiff (Turner-who will all know and love from "West Wing"), Laura Dern (Randy Carpenter) and Loretta Devine (Margaret Calgrove). Nelson who not only directed, but was screenwriter and producer takes this story to a realistic plato, sending the audience into a tearful realm of uncertainty. The score by John Powell is heartwarming within a contemporary shell of guitar and cello works by such artists ~ George Doering and Heitor Pereira (ukes/guitars), Steve Erdody (cello), Michael Fisher (percussion), Dave Carpenter (bass) and strings by The Hollywood Studio Symphony serve up an entertaining cup of coffee while creating a musically loving environment for one and all, gotta love it! And now folks for the stand outs ~ "STARBUCKS & HOSPITAL"..."SAM'S FRIENDS"(hints of flamengo)..."READING TOGETHER"(beautiful serene flowing lilting)..."RITA"(reggae flows readily)..."MAKING COFFEE"(fun filled percussion exceeds)..."NIGHTTIME VISITS"(fabulous arrangement and outstanding performance by all) ~ each cue is entirely poignant with compassion and sentimentally thrown in, great listen
for "film-score-buffs" who fancy the genres of new age, classical and jazz intermingled, with a touch of celtic here and there. Total Time: 40:58 on 19 Tracks ~ Varese Sarabande 302-066-317-2 ~ (2001)"

"John Powell proves that he is not just a master of the traditional orchestra. However, he also shows that he is well capable of writing electro-acoustic music too. Did anyone besides me notice the phone-rings and computer key-taps in several tracks?"
Sweet

"This is a touching score by John Powell for a sweet movie. Powell has done other films that are light and touching, chicken run, antz, shrek, in collaboration with gregson-williams. Powell has also done action movies like face/off. This is quiet and something to relax to."
