Synopsis

Album Description
UK release compiled from the late blues legend's recordings for Chicago's famous Vee Jay Records between 1955 & 1964 while at his artistic peak. Here are 60 highlights from that Vee Jay era. Each disc has been themed to reflect various aspects of his unique sound. Disc one is Hooker in various small group settings, disc two concentrates on his atmospheric, folk blues sound, whilst the third disc collects together the best from his later, urban blues style. Here are his definitive readings of such classic songs as 'I'm In The Mood', 'Crawling Kingsnake' & the originals of the two biggest hits of his career, 'Boom, Boom' & 'Dimples'. Housed in a compact, handsome box, each disc is presented in its own attractive wallet. 2001.

CD Reviews

Good stuff from Hooker's best period
Docendo Discimus | Vita scholae | 04/09/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This may look like a second-rate box set, but it actually draws from John Lee Hooker's best period, his classic 50s and 60s Vee-Jay sides, which produced some of his most accessible and enjoyable singles ("Dimples", "Hobo Blues", "Blues Before Sunrise", "Big Legs, Tight Skirt", "Time Is Marchin'", "It Serves Me Right To Suffer").

Not everything you'll ever want to hear from that period is here, and Tomato's two discs covering the same period and titled "The Early Years vol. I-II remain the best overview of the Hook's Vee-Jay years, but this is actually a good place to get a lot of great stuff all at once."
