CD ReviewsExceptional piano trio Evan Chandlee | Paris, France | 12/05/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "John Hicks can be compared to earlier greats such as Tommy Flanagan and Hank Jones for his improvisatory brilliance. Among the younger pianists, he stands out for his touch, which is unique - he draws a very rich sound from the keyboard - and for his voicings. Jazz piano lovers in the New York area should make an effort to catch one of his numerous club appearances. As here with Ray Drummond, he seem to bring out the best in bass players. This set, beautifully recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in his historic N.J. studio, is further enhanced by the incredibly talented Marvin "Smitty" Smith, omnipresent in the late 80s & early 90s with artists ranging from Hank Jones and Sonny Rollins to Steve Coleman. He meets all musical challenges and is capable of tremendous power as well as perfect taste. What has become of him? Since signing up with Jay Leno in 1995, the jazz world hasn't heard much of him." EXCELLENT JAZZ INTERPRETATIONS J. Preston | Wayne, PA | 05/04/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "This album is EXCELLENT. John Hicks is a superb pianist--his take on "Turn Out the Stars," the Bill Evans standard, is some of the best stuff in jazz. "Everytime We Say Goodbye" has such perfect lush patience and "Expectations" will relax you beyond repair. A great jazz album--certainly worth buying."
