CD Reviews

John Hartford - what else can I say?
Grits | South, USA | 12/22/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"You either know who John Hartford is (was) and love his music/creativity/musical brilliance/sense of humor, or you don't. I've never collected records (later tapes, now CDs) of any other artist, but have purchased just about anything John Hartford produced since first seeing him on the old Glenn Campbell show back in the 60s. Hartford was brilliant, had a great (if not off beat at times) sense of humor with his music, and was just plain talented beyond the level of most performers/writers - who else can pick a 5-string banjo and make the mixed in orchestral music sound like it belongs there in some pieces? And how many musicians write songs that pay tribute to other artists by name, while essentially equaling those same musical heros? This dual CD replaces two 33 1/3 LPs that I simply don't have the equipment to play anymore (but can't bring myself to part with either). If you like Hartford (especially his earlier work), you'll enjoy this. I started with "Housing Project" and never quit buying Hartford since. These two were no disappointment."
