"I've been a John Denver fan for many years. I have always considered him to be an incredibly gifted and insightful songwriter and singer. He was especially talented at writing and singing love songs. Many of them are included in this compilation entitled simply 'Love Songs'.
John had a unique, personal way of delivering a song that many artists lack. It was very evident in the interaction he had with his audiences during his concerts but it also came across in his recordings. Several of his better known love songs are included on this album, 'Annie's Song'; 'Poems, Prayers and Promises'; 'Perhaps Love'; and 'Dreamland Express'. Longtime Denver fans will also be happy to learn that lesser known but beautiful songs like 'Come And Let Me Look In Your Eyes' and 'You're So Beautiful' are also included. The bittersweet and moving 'Seasons of the Heart' is a loving farewell to a partner who no longer seems to care.
I almost gave this only 4 stars instead of 5 because I didn't understand why 'Baby, You Look Good To Me Tonight' was included in this album of love songs. Unless I misread something, this album is about love - not lust. I also didn't understand why cover songs were included when John wrote so many great love songs himself. There were so many wonderful love songs to choose from. I would have included songs like 'Thought of You'; 'For You'; 'How Can I Leave You Again'; 'I Can't Escape'; 'Shanghai Breezes' or my personal favorites, 'Follow Me' and 'Singing Skies and Dancing Waters'. 'Baby' is a good song. It just seems out of place in this collection.
I have a special fondness for 'My Sweet Lady'. I think it is one of the loveliest and most poignant songs John ever wrote, and he sings it from the heart.
John loved Alaska as I do and wrote several songs about the wilderness and wildlife there. This collection contains a live performance of 'A Song For All Lovers', a song about a couple in love dancing "somewhere in the moonlight, somewhere in Alaska, two hearts beating as one". Sweet poetry ... sweet music ... if I've ever heard it.
You can't go wrong in purchasing this CD.
