We may never associate Johann Strauss with Berlin (he's just so darn Vienna), but Nikolaus Harnoncourt does some ingenious programming on this disc to reveal one new facet of the composer's life: Strauss's numerous works tied to (or composed for) Berlin audiences. Thus, we finally get to hear the short but sweet Berlin version of the overture to A Night in Venice (performed here for the first time); Seid umschlungen, Millionen, the melancholy-tinged waltz that Strauss dedicated to Brahms; and the Simplicius Waltz that the composer himself conducted in Berlin in 1889. Throughout, Harnoncourt's tempos are accurate and never too fast. He lets this music slowly unfold; even the oom-pah-pahs sound studied. The Berlin Philharmonic performs these works gorgeously and the recorded sound is spectacular. --Jason Verlinde

CD Reviews

Splendid Johann Strauss from Harnoncourt and BPO
John Kwok | New York, NY USA | 02/12/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Back in 1999, Teldec released this CD - a combined studio and live performance recording - devoted to music composed by Viennese Waltz king Johann Strauss Jr. pertaining to Berlin. The most familiar pieces are probably the Kaiser ("Emperor") Waltz the overture to his operetta Die Fledermaus, and Trisch-Trasch Polka. But Harnoncourt and the Berlin Philharmonic also offer excellent performances of the shortened Berlin version of the overture to the operetta A Night in Venice - performed and recorded for the first time here - the waltz Seid umschlungen, Millionen - which Strauss dedicated to Brahms and the Simplicius Waltz conducted by Strauss himself in Berlin in 1889. Harnoncourt's tempi are stately, unrushed, with vivid, brilliant playing by the Berliners. It remains one of his best CDs of music composed by Johann Strauss, ranking alongside his New Year's Concert CDs with the Vienna Philharmonic."
