A Technical Masterpiece, But Not Much More

"John Williams is the biggest name in the classical guitar world of people who are still active. However, there are better guitarists out there. This CD is a perfect example of why that's true. Williams is a superb technical guitarist, playing flawlessly in a rather effortless manner(which is not so easy because the classical guitar, according to many experts, is the most difficult instrument to master), showing the listener his marvelous technique on the guitar. Unfortunately his interpretations, especially of Bach, are somewhat cold and lacking of emotion and spirtuality. Both Julian Bream and Christoper Parkening bring more warmth to these pieces. Then there is the Master Segovia, who is on a level all his own in both technique and warmth. If you want a perfect listening experience go with Segovia's Bach recordings. If you're studying Bach or learning to play guitar and want to know how the pieces should sound, pick up this CD. The technical ability of Mr Williams is amazing, but he lacks the warmth of some of his counterparts. Still, at a bargain price, this record should be a welcome addition to any fan of Bach or the baroque guitar."

"John Williams is very well known to the classical guitar world. As a classical guitar performer, I have always found it enlightening to listen to a John Williams interpretation of the piece I am deciphering. So, with the Lute Suites, John Williams again, is technically and musically very very good. Lute Suites are lovely and intelligent. They carry Bach signatures and I think, in this case, classical guitar reflects the Baroque feeling very successfully."
