"It was a struggle to get hold of Vanhal string quartets. I read somewhere that some 53 quartets have been authenticated as written by Vanhal (100 claimed elsewhere). As far as I can ascertain, only the six quartets on this disk by the Kubin Quartet and a now out-out-of-print set by the Stamic Quartet have been recorded at all. These six were written between 1769 and 1773. They are simpler compositions as far as quartet writing goes, more like the Haydn Opus 9 quartets dating from the same time period. They are delightful quartets. I could find only one copy of this CD on the Internet - second hand. I emailed the Kubin Quartet to find out where I could possibly find another copy. I also hope they (or another string quartet) would record more of the Vanhal string quartets."

"Vanhal lived in the days of Mozart, Haydn, Ditterdorf, Boccherini, Stamitz, Hummel, Kraus, and etc. On occasion, he played String Quartets with Haydn, Mozart and Dittersdorf. These SQ's are early works of Vanhal and have just 3 movements, but they are well crafted and highly energetic. They are excellent and are in the same category as Dittersdorf's SQs. Vanhal was a true pioneer of the SQ as was Dittersdorf, Mozart and Haydn. I just wish there was a complete set of his SQs recorded."
