Joel McNeely's best score!

"This time, Joel Mc Neely ("Star Wars: shadow of the empire" ; "Virus" ; "Flipper") wrote his most convincing, heart-warming score to date. This is not just a soundtrack: the score stands on its own as a moving tone poem for small orchestra. This is truly a labor of love (no pun intended) for the composer writes from his heart and in doing so succeeds in moving serious music lovers. There is a beautiful pastoral, meditative atmosphere in this score, like looking through old photographs and reminiscing about the past. Mr. McNeely eschews the traditional nod to bombastic romantiscism but creates instead a beautiful poetic canvas, with a particular emphasis on woodwind writing (oboe, clarinet, english horn) that bring a wonderful chamber, intimate feel to the score. Fans of composers such as Frederick Delius and Vaughan Williams will have a field day listening to this CD. Although I am certain the movie will die a quick death at the box office, the CD definitely deserves a better fate. The score features a wonderful British orchestra which truly shines. If you are a fan of elegant and romantic score, do not pass up this little gem. This soundtrack grows on me with each listening. As an interesting bonus, the two main themes are arranged as a haunting piano Nocturne that reminds me of great Russian composers such as Alexander Scriabin: dark and melancholic. The recording done at Abbey Road Studio 1 is excellent, with a wonderful soundstage presence and very spacious ambience. This CD has been one of the most pleasant - albeit obscure - soundtrack surprises of 2000. I think Joel McNeely deserves to score many more period dramas such as "Lover's Prayer". Buy it, turn up the volume and let your thoughts wonder..."
Gorgeously romantic

"This is another gorgeous score by McNeely with one of the most memorable and finest themes of this year - and McNeely wisely builds his score around that theme. A score that is straightway romantic with a beautiful classical touch. Brilliant performance by the London Chamber Orchestra. Lover's Prayer once again shows the great talent of its composer. A must!"
