Album DescriptionJoel Brandon ?Haven?t We All?? S-SSD 0089 ?Not only is he a mighty whistler, he is also a brilliant flute player, composer, arranger, orchestrator and transcriptionist?? Larry Smith, The All Night Jazz Host On Chicago Public Radio WBEZ-FM 91.5 Southport Records continues it?s tradition of introducing bold new artists into the 21st century with Flutist/Vocalist/Composer and ?Master Whistler? Joel Brandon and his new CD ?Haven?t We All??? Decades ago when whistlers were at the height of their popularity, they would appear at Carnegie Hall or offer their rendition of the national anthem for the Yankees. Brandon, a modern whistling innovator and holder of several national and international championship titles, including his induction to the ?Whistlers Hall Of Fame? in 1997, blends traditional whistling with jazz/blues/latin and African modes of musical expression. A highlight of Joel?s touring was a special guest segment on the Johnny Carson Show, and whistling at opening games for the San Francisco Giants. Featured artists on the CD, a collaborative release between Southport, AECO and Katalyst Records, are a heavy international cast of players that include drummer Billy Higgins (sadly one of his last recordings), multi-percussionist and drummer Famoudou Don Moye, and Chicago keyboard giant Willie Pickens, along with Harrison Bankhead on bass, Kirk Brown on piano, Morris Jennings on drums, and Keith Henderson on guitar. Along with several superb examples of Brandon?s whistling, he is also featured on flute and vocals, and all but two of the tracks are Brandon?s original compositions. As major record labels bow to the pressures of the economy and bad taste, Southport Records continues to record, produce and distribute new music, from Chicago, to a world audience.
