In that time thick skulled music critics have fawned over Lenny Kravitz, Bob Dylan, and just about every other idiot with a guitar. Would Joe be rolling around in his grave? Probably not. I think he would be winking at us--recognition isn't what it's about, kid."

"This was the first Joe Pass CD I ever bought, and it blew me away. Because Mr.Pass plays solo on this album, he avoids the noodling that ruins alot of jazz guitar albums(Not any of his though). Even people who don't play guitar will love this album. Pass also wrote all the tunes on it, and they are amazing. He is a great songwriter, as well as a great guitar player."

"As of this writing, I own the first three recordings in the Virtuoso series. So far each one is different: not just in the tunes chosen, but in the selection of tone and aspects of the style. Because the tunes on this CD were written by Joe Pass himself, he must have felt a particular closeness to them. Overall, the effect is much more like an album of studies and much less free-wheeling than the other albums in the series. Technically, the playing is cleaner and I can imagine that there were many more takes in the studio--and perhaps even a few edits.
This isn't a bad thing at all. The pieces are generally more contemplative and considered and they deserve a careful performance. They're not up there in compositional technique with Britten, Carter, Bach or other classical composers, but they're nice pieces nonetheless. Think of them as a fine musician's view of the world. Just the ticket for a quiet hour at home."
