Synopsis
Album Description Part two of the Joe Morris/AUM Fidelity 2009 triptych, this release features Morris' new collective group concept with Petr Cancura on tenor & alto sax and Luther Gray on drums. Fully improvised, the recording resulted in a warm and inviting glow with four distinct takeoffs and landings. Guitarist, bassist, and composer Joe Morris has been hitting a whole new stride of unfettered creativity in the past year. Wildlife is as uncompromising as ever, yet fully inviting and accessible. "Morris takes his vision to the bass in a whirling cycle of percolation." -- All About Jazz "If music was a mansion, its genres would be the many rooms. While some rooms have a couple of ways in and out, Petr Cancura has been looking for the secret passageway that connects them all." -- Vue Weekly "Gray plays the drums as percussive melody, so they knit themselves seamlessly into the fabric of the ensemble." -- Signal To Noise |
CD ReviewsA Lovely Improvised Performance John C. Graham | toronto, ontario Canada | 09/15/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "The quotes from various sources (see above) tell you everything you need to know about this jewel of a disc...accessible, yet compelling and mysterious, pure improvisation that never pushes the envelope too far. Petr Cancura plays with an easy fluency, a not too abrasive tone and, at times, controlled restraint. With lots of saxophone players out there, it takes something extra to be heard and remembered these days. This might be a guy to watch. The other two guys, Joe Morris and Luther Gray, really make this one special. Their playing is outstanding. Cancura lucked out when this project made it to the studio. Recordings with a sax/bass/drums line-up are common enough in today's marketplace. This trio pulls the plug on most of those. It's a moonshoot better than average. Four improvisations with a total time of just under an hour. Studio engineering, packaging, and art work are all excellent." Totally free Anthony Cooper | Louisville, KY United States | 11/20/2009 (3 out of 5 stars) "Joe Morris gathered his acoustic bass, Petr Cancura on saxophone, and Luther Gray on drums and recorded a very free CD. This has the strengths and disadvantages of that setup -- the songs travel without a roadmap (though usually with a rhythm), and there aren't any repeated themes. This type of free jazz can't be compared to more mainstream fare, so to rate it I compare it to Anthony Braxton, William Parker, and Milford Grave's "Beyond Quantum". The Braxton disc was a 4 star, and I prefer its focus to "Wildlife"'s more meanering feel. Still, fans of totally free jazz should consider it."
