"The thing about Joe Beck is that people don't know how good or creative he is. I was fortunate to first hear him in 1975 on a Bill Watrous recording. His playing within that context immediately captured my attention.
He can play a variety of styles such as Blues, Rock, Fusion and here, Jazz. This is an outstanding trio being that he has Mark Egan and Danny Gottlieb to round out the trio.
Joe's playing is exemplary throughout. He swings, he has this full, fat tone, that implies blues but with that jazz suppleness. He improvises with imagination. He's like a guitar version of Dexter Gordon in the way he can deconstruct a melody and accentuate a portion of it in a unique way. Joe has a unique voice on guitar.
Danny Gottlieb plays as well as I've ever heard him play. He is an essential trio drummer. I heard him years ago with Michel Petruccianni where he was perfectly in synch and as he is here. He plays with plays with a sense of swing, with power and with sensitivity to what's going on at all times.
For me, after hearing a number of guitar trio recordings recently, I found this one refreshing and unique. Vibrant with all the essential ingredients and with a strong sense of identity.
