"For anyone unfamiliar with Brazilian music, this album is a great introduction. All the exuberant joy and incredible melancholy of Brazilian life is contained here. Through songs such as Pai Grande and Herois da Liberdade the depth of feeling in the Brazilian spirit is visible, yet the lightness of the music and sentiment shows the Brazilians' capability of laughing at life and at themselves, no matter how bad things seem. Forro em Limoeira and Expresso 2222 display the vibrancy of Brazilian Carnaval culture, and Um Gago Apaixonado (an impassioned stutterer) is just plain funny!This is an album which is deeply emotional without being heavy or cloying, and which will raise feelings of "saudades" in anyone who has ever been to the country."

"Enough joking about Joao's
stunning wardrobe on the cover, this cd is a loving tribute to the
great Brasilian musicians/performers that "came
before".
Each song stamped unmistakeably with Joao's jazzy
vocal frasing- wonderful twists and turns as he
"de-composes" each tune and adds his personal signature
without desecrations of the original composer's vision.Combine this
with Joao's unique "NOVO VIOLAO GAGO", the syncopated
polyritmos that he swings out on the violao have etched his place in
Brasilian musical history as one of the great innovators. A unique
voice on an instrument that makes it difficult to be so original, much
like the muted tone jazz guitar styles , post Charlie Christian- Joao
is unmistakeable from the first few chords, and he has few
imitators...completely an original! I wont go song by song, as I
would have to write on each composer. If you are Brasilian, or a
Brasilianista, you KNOW who wrote each composition. I just say, I
havent enjoyed certain songs in a long time, until Joao released this
cd. There's been quite a bit more music from O Joao in the recent
years since this recording. Newer , funkier, jazzier all the time, and
with world beat aspirations- but it seems to be getting ignored on a
grand scale, as nova brasilianistas flock towards his earlier, more
poetic works.(Noone writes lyrics like his ex partner, Aldir Blanc,
save, Vinicius de Moraes....)I think Joao hurt his "HIPNESS
QUOTIENT"(as Djavan also..) WHEN HE COLLABORATED WITH AMERICAN
MUSICIANS FROM THE "SMOOTH JAZZ" idiom. (Lee Ritenour, in
particular just aint to hip with the hipness mafia.)These
recordings have a lot of great musics, and should be given their
due. ANYTHING Bosco does gets 10000000000 stars from me!Nao admira,
preciso botar azeitona na empada do Joao.....ouca isso, um barulho bem
pra frente!!!!!
