"Jimmy Martin was originally a band member of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys. This album was recorded at the famous Louisiana Hayride in the late 1950's. Martin started his own band called the Sunny Mountain Boys soon after his time with Monroe. I will say this is a pretty decent album with some extrememly powerful vocals from Martin. It's not quite as polished and bluesy as Bill Monroe or not nearly as eerie or haunting as the mountain sound. it's just really loud! It's really really loud and intense bluegrass. This album is really full of energy and quickness. Martin and the band definitely put their heart and soul into the event and that definitely comes across in the album.
I really like "Worried Man Blues", although the best I ever heard it was at a Ralph Stanley concert, but I do not think him or his band have recorded that song. Martin does a good job. Also "Hit Parade of Love" is pretty powerful. I also like the gospel number "Somebody Touched Me" as well. This is just a pumped up, fast pace, energized bluegrass album. There are even better Martin complilations, but this one is a good live traditional sample. J.D. Crowe works the banjo and Paul Williams is on mandolin."
