CD Reviews

So-so early Hendrix
Andre M. | Mt. Pleasant, SC United States | 02/09/2007
(3 out of 5 stars)

"These are some recordings Jimi made with Curtis Knight and the Squires before he was famous around 1965-67. Mostly low-budget, second rate R&B, but soem good material nonetheless. Jimi plays while Knight "sings." (Trust me, he's no Marvin Gaye).

The title cut sounds as if Knight was awakwardly making up the lyrics as he was going along. But it has an offbeat appeal.

"How Would You Feel" has the most interesting lyrics of this set. Here, Knight and Jimi do an upbeat Dylanesque piece about what its like to experience segregation. Unusual in that few R&B singers would openly touch this kind of material until Sam Cooke and James Brown.

"Hush Now" is a nice, relaxed instrumental from Jimi, if a bit unfocused at the end. "No Business" is one of the better tunes here. This is the kind of singalong that you do best with a bunch of drunk friends. It's a funny, funky tale about going broke.

No classic, but worthwhile if you buy a good used copy."
