TWO MEN TWO DIFFERENT STYLES

"THIS ALBUM CAN SAFELY BE CHARACTERISED AS AVANT GARDE/FREE JAZZ, BUT DON'T TUNE OUT BECAUSE OF THAT. WHILE THE TWO EWART TRACKS ARE ADMITTEDLY A LOT OF SQUAWKIN AND FARTING SOUNDS (WHICH I NEVER LISTEN TO) GEORGE LEWIS' TRACKS, THE LAST TWO ARE WORTH OWNING THE DISC FOR. LEWIS IS GIFTED WITH AN INCREDIBLE LYRICISM, AND CAN MAKE THE TROMBONE SOUND LITHE AND BEAUTIFUL. THE FIRST OF HIS TWO TRACKS IS DEDICATED TO DAVID MURRAY, AND THE SECOND IS A WONDERFUL PRECURSOR TO THE CLASSIC "HOMAGE TO CHARLIE PARKER" FROM THE CD OF THE SAME NAME. RECOMMENDED TO THOSE WITH AN OPEN MIND."
A marvelous musical work

"Both George Lewis and Douglas Ewart create arresting, complex music here, in ways that powerfully contrast and powerfully pull together. Ewart's work deserves to be heard and appreciated more, I believe, and this is one place to start. Another is the recording with Fred Anderson and Kidd Jordan released some years back.
Highly recommended for the musical invention, awesome sound textures, and the energized interplay of two major jazz voices."
