Its life as a stage show began in New York in 1971; the London version opened the next year and ran for 3,358 performances. Norman Jewison directed the 1973 film on location in Israel with Tim Neeley as Christ, Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene, and Carl Anderson as Judas Iscariot. It purports to recreate the last days of the life of Christ through the medium of rock, pop, and other modern styles of music. ("King Herod's Song" is a kind of retro-ragtime.) The New York and London Original Cast versions are also available, along with highlights from both and a later revisitation called Jesus Christ Superstar: A Resurrection. --Stanley Booth Similarly Requested CDs

CD ReviewsJCS - still fascinating after all these years 07/14/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "My parents took me to see this show in NY in '1972 and I have been hooked ever since. 2 years ago I bought the 2 CD set and it brought back many fond memories. The words and music to this show are still incredibly powerful and clever -even now. Although I enjoy listening to this version, I still remember the voices and inflections of the cast members that I was lucky enough to enjoy back in '72 (I must have played that album a million times). Ted Neeley as Christ, Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene and - yes Ben Vereen(!) as Judas. The three of them were absolutely amazing.
