Simple and Effective
John Buckingham | Worcester, MA USA | 03/11/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Another bullseye for young Wisconsin born, Massachusetts based songwriter/singer/guitarist Jeffrey Foucault. Despite being a collection of songs penned by legendary folkie John Prine, Foucault puts his own distinctive stamp on each and makes them all better than the original recordings. While Prine's voice always has been limited and somewhat thin, Foucault's warm, sweet, supple light baritone with a welcome dusty edge is one of the best in current folk. His renditions of "Billy the Bum", "One Red Rose", "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" and "Storm Windows" find the emotion and lyricism in each. Just try not to be moved by his spare, heartfelt singing of "Unwed Fathers" - I dare you. Production is stripped down, more in line with his classic MILES FROM THE LIGHTNING and STRIPPING CANE albums than with his glossier (but still masterful) GHOST REPEATER, and all the better for it. (Several cuts feature just his own guitar playing as accompaniment.) Even though the year still in young, this MOON is rising as one of the best releases of 2009."
Foucault's voice through Prine, a great tribute

"I must admit to being a big fan of Foucault already. I am also familiar with John Prine's music. This is the best of both worlds. A great tribute that grows and deserves repeated listening. This album is about the subtle capturing of individual feeling in songwriting. Each song is a different moment, a different emotion brilliantly captured through the resonant voice of another world class songwriter. As with all great tributes, your sense and understanding of both artists increases and is re-elivened through Foucault's subtle and naked interpretations. Powerful. This cd will really grow on you!"
