CD ReviewsSwinging Saxophone!!! Jazzer Man45 | Orlando, FL | 11/21/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "Jeff Rupert heads the Jazz Studies Department at the University of Central Florida, in Orlando. His sound is fantastic, he's out of the Stan Getz//Lester Young tradition. Most of the tunes here are originals, and they're great! Very memorable melodies...
The band is killing: Richard Drexler on bass, John Jenkins on drums and the AMAZING Kenny Drew, Jr. on piano. Drew is a true virtuoso, and he and Rupert play four duets on the session. The Sam Rivers tune "Beatrice" is one; "I Loves you Porgy"; "Basin St. Blues" (with the Louis Armstrong cadenza!!!); and "A Single Petal to a Rose" (maybe the most beautiful Duke Ellington tune ever). The sound quality is unsurpassed: Great production!!! Rupert deserves to be heard: He's a fine saxophonist, soloist, arranger and composer. This is one of the best CDs of the year!!!" |
