"'Water Sign' is this groups Arista debut and is the most
groove orientated of thier albums to date!"Toads Place","Tune
88","Right Here" and "Lights Out" all have solid, righteous
rhythms and a delectable sense of groove. In the meantime the
more tame "Rain Dance" is,as it was, more commercialized but no
less inventive.Later on melodic, funky fusion such as this would
have it's teeth knocked out by a radio playlist that had become
very rigid and homogonized-becomming known as smooth jazz. But all that is is very light pop in the end;in 1979 fusion was
fusion and that's what you'll get here!Unfortunately this is
the only available CD statement by the pre-Kenny G Jeff Lorber
Fusion lineup available. It would be nice if the Inner City label
would reissue the bands first two LP's that came before this one so they could be heard because THEY were the absolute hardest-edged music that this band ever made. But for a glimpse into that period when Jeff Lorber was still making genuine
funk/fusion this is the place to go!"
