"This is a nice overview of JLP's material from the late 1960s, when he was starting to give hints of his future direction in jazz-rock fusion. It demonstrates his virtuosity of course (as all his recordings do), but in particular shows how he combines bebop phrasing with very punchy rhythmic motifs and use of pentatonic scales. There are great examples of hard-bop style playing (eg "Pebble Beach Walk" and "With a Little Help From My Friends"). You also get a few tracks from his King Kong album with Zappa, and live performances with George Duke (eg 'Cantaloupe Island', 'Eighty-one') and some tracks with the Gerald Wilson orchestra. Anyway, it's great jazz violin, the type of which is not really present in any contemporary player. Should really be played more on jazz radio stations so people would know what Ponty accomplished before his more well-know fusion work."
