"Jean Leloup is no more... he's quit the music business and changed his name back to Leclerc. It sucks, but at least he's left us with La vallée des réputations, a strong final album. (Well, it might not really be *final*, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.) As usual, Leloup enchants with his eloquent and original lyrics, which are really just fables set to music. This guy has a delightful imagination. But what impressed me the most on this album has to be the music... the CD sleeve says that it was recorded almost live, "pour la beauté du geste, contre la froideur" (or something like that) and indeed, the whole thing is infused with bright energy that doesn't go stale no matter how many times you listen to it. the rythms range from jazz to flamenco to blues to rock to folk. my favourite songs on this album... hard to say, but i'd have to say "je suis parti" for its tapestry of guitars, "le paradis perdu" for its great lyrics and wicked climax (although the instrumental ending is too long) and "cruel song" for is neat opening chords and leloup's cute way of singing it, even though the lyrics are weird (but leloup didn't write them, so it's okay).i had the chance to see one of leloup's last shows at the national arts center in november 2003, and it was just amazing... he comes off as very funny, cool, smart, and respectful of his fans. so i like him for those reasons, not just for his talent, his originality and his contribution to québec, canada and the french language at large. johnny, we'll miss you."
5 stars - but not Jean Leloup's best

"I love this album but I think you have to be a Jean Leloup fan in order to like it. I tend to get fairly negative reactions when I loan or play this to friends.

My favorite Jean Leloup album is Les Formis (1998 - his last album before Vallee Des Reputations). And that is the album that I noramally use to introduce people to Jean Leloup (and it usually suceeds).

Vallee Des Reputations is not as dynamic as Les Formis. And it requires more serious listening to fully appreciate it.

And is it the last true album for Leloup? (Exit came out in 2005 - a live album from his farewell concerts?) - He has publicly announced he has given up music for other projects.

You can get all of Jean Leloup's albums on amazon.ca.
