Janis & Big Brother at Their Best
Jeff Farrow | 01/21/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"[NOTE 10/11/08: I just saw the new price for this CD & either its a typo or its pretty outrageous. Hopefully it can be purchased from a private vendor. If this was the only copy available, then it might be worth $34 + change + shipping.]

CHEAP THRILLS with JANIS JOPLIN is arguably the best Janis Joplin recording & a must for any CD library. This is the legendary singer at the top of that vocal force that wowed a generation. She was one of the few female rock singers who became a superstar in her own right. Unfortunately her tremendous ego and equally tremendous insecurity ultimately proved her down fall. Still she will never be forgotten.

Big Brother was a great rock band in their own right--and one can only speculate what could have happened if egos & commercialism hadn't driven the band & Joplin apart.

PS. I feel that I should add a detail of the CD contents: The original LP concluded with "Ball 'n Chain." This CD, however adds a couple a lack-lustre songs as "bonus" selection. These added selections screw up the continuity of the original line-up. My suggestion is to just tune them out & let the singer's signiture song stand on its own as the conclusion. Some critics say that the Big Brother & The Holding Co. was somehow less talented than JJ. On this CD I think that view is disproved. The back-up in "Ball 'n Chain" is truly masterful & totally insynch with Joplin's interpretation. Another reason why it should be the finall song.
