CD Reviews

JANE VOSS -- She's a gem.
Under the Big Sky | Bozeman, MT USA | 07/20/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I really like this record. Her songs speak to so many emotions, and the instrumentation and arrangements make this one of my favorite of her recordings, and I've liked them all very much.Producer Hoyle Osborne and the musicians with Jane really did a very nice job. It was a treat to hear her singing again with Kate Brislin. And Eric Thompson seemed to know just what kind of backup and lead instrumentals would work. Some of the songs seem to get a little bit long, but not enough to detract from their beauty. There's not a bad song, but I do really like the ones with Bill Evans on the banjo, especially the nice little back and forth between he and Jane on the opening moments of "Free At Last (Let Me Find My Way)." The last song of the album, the title track, really takes it home. She makes anything seem possible, so much hope. The vocalists who sing with Jane all seem like their in a living room somewhere, or maybe a church meeting, but not being churchy, just community-spirited.Aw, heck, just get the record and enjoy it!"
A modern Woody Guthrie
Under the Big Sky | 10/22/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Jane Voss is an extraordinary singer-songwriter in the old time country folk music tradition. All the songs on this album were written by her, and a moving collection it is. Her lyrics have the American beauty, simplicity and power of Woody Guthrie songs. The tunes are memorable in the most toe-tapping, humming-all-day-long kind of way. Her voice soars over and around these wonderful songs. Long may she sing. Enjoy."
