CD ReviewsWonderful Gem E. C Goodstein | Northern CA United States | 04/12/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "So nice to finally see this rare Dot title made available again. Jane went on later to be a very
effective cabaret artist (I like that Sondheim album much more than the reviewer here!), but it is true she has much more vibrato later on. At this date (1959), her rich and expressive pop mezzo is in full bloom. Beautiful version of Steve Allen's 'Impossible,' 'Misty' and confident 'Witchcraft' that ok owes much to Sinatra, but effective. Also many rarities that deserve attention like snappy 'Telephonez-Moi,' nice ballad 'Lover in the House,' rare Dorothy Fields/Jimmy McHugh 'Blue Again,' more blues-based 'Sent for You Yesterday and Here You Come Today,' torchy approach to Mercer's 'Travellin' Light,' and others. Approach is more classic pop and even 'Garlandesque' belting at times than jazz per se (check 'Man Who Got Away'), but very good for that. If you like '50's pop vocalists, this album is a very cool addition." |
