The ONE & ONLY

"This is the sole recording of these two symphonies. Jan Vaclav Kalivoda is another creative Romantic era Czech. He's not quite a Dvorak or Smetana, but he provides a very worthy break from the great warhorses when you want something different. The final bars of the codas are like Litolff at his wildest. While the recording, done at the Radio Plzen studio is slightly tinny, it's still lovable. If you respond strongly to emotional romantic sounds, acquire this CD. I want to hear his first four symphonies!"
An almost forgotten but great talent

"Jan Vaclav Kaliwoda wrote his symphonies in the first half of the nineteenth century. The fifth of them is a good example of his symphonic work, but I'd have added the wonderful first symphony to it for what is right now the only existing Kaliwoda symphonic cd. Let's hope that someone records the rest of his symphonies soon."
